Frequently Asked Questions
How many points do I need?
The total amount of points needed is 120. 100 must be from community service, and 20 must be from tutoring. What qualifies as NHS service points? Most points will be attained through helping voluntarily at a school, community, or nonprofit organization. The following shows the service points are attainable by all members
Remember all points require: date, time, organization, work performed, supervisor name, title and signature of supervising personnel, phone number, and hours earned. If you are unsure about a specific event being considered service then feel free to ask Mrs. Norton or any of the officers, or email [email protected]. How can I check my points? Please check with the Advisor and Officers to determine the number of points that you have. What if I regularly volunteer at a school, library, hospital, etc? Obtaining a letter from the supervisor may take the place of the point log as long as the letter contains all the information required by the NHS log. Who can sign my point tally sheet? The supervisor of the event. No parent signature is acceptable UNLESS the parent is the supervising person of the organization. Need help finding places to volunteer? Check the Event Calendar |
What is considered tutoring?
Any type of academic assistance to a student in need of further instruction in a particular subject. 30 minutes of tutoring counts for 1 point. Where can I tutor? Both REACH and Saturday school are excellent tutoring opportunities for members. Contact Mrs. Norton if you are interested in doing Saturday school. Additionally, some teachers may need help with tutoring students after school. Elementary schools are another option. |
How many meetings do I have to attend?
Members are required to attend all meetings, which are announced through the NHS Remind. If you are unable to attend a meeting, please email [email protected] OR send a message to the Remind with an explanation why. Absences may be excused for the following reasons:
How is a member dismissed from NHS? Individuals who fall below the standards which were the basis for selection shall be promptly warned in writing by Mrs. Norton and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency in most cases. There is NO automatic dismissal from NHS. Members shall have the right to a hearing before the Faculty Council. A parent/guardian may be present with the member; however, the primary focus of the hearing is to allow the member to present his/her case. At the conclusion of the hearing, the Faculty Council is necessary for dismissal. Unfortunately, if dismissed, the member will receive written notice sent by Mrs. Norton to the member, parents/guardian, and Mr. Hypolite. How may a member regain membership into NHS? After a member is dismissed, the individual is no longer eligible for membership in National Honor Society. |
